An interview with Dundee Butcher, CEO of Phoam Labs, revealed groundbreaking developments in sustainable floristry. In a podcast conversation with Roz Chandler of Field Gate Flowers, Dundee shared insights into how Phoam Labs is transforming the industry with the world's first compostable floral foam.

For decades, traditional floral foam — phenol-formaldehyde, a petroleum-based plastic — has been one of the dirtiest secrets in our otherwise beautiful industry. The Phoam Labs alternative is genuinely compostable, water-retaining, and behaves on the bench in a way florists recognise. It is not a perfect answer (we still believe in chicken-wire-and-moss first wherever possible), but it is a meaningful step for designers and venues who cannot yet make the full leap.

This is exactly the kind of innovation we will keep championing — and teaching about — at the School.
